I did this, much easier then twist tie.
Side Bolt: I had an issue getting the side bolt to engage the T-nut since the nut had a tendency to lay back at an angle. Found a small magnet, attached to the end of an allen key and used that to insert the nut and hold exactly where it needed to be - easy.
I recommend getting a set of “90 Degree Positioning Squares” (search on amazon, mine are red) and get a set of small clamps. These squares can be clamped to the extrusion while fastening to ensure squareness. They even have some bolt holes and can be T-nutted onto the extrusions so if you have enough of these it can really help square up a frame before tightening down the plates. I agree 100% about the horrible brackets.
…and I must sheepishly admit I went ahead and milled the surfaces. Filing down the lip fixed about 70-80% of the issue but the paint is still not entirely consistent. I have a mill so why not have perfect.
I took a “90 degree positioning (clamp) square” to check the squareness of the brackets by back-lighting with a flashlight. Then from the front look for light shining through. The bracket surfaces are square, but there is a lip on the end that is throwing it off. So milling is not required since the lip can be filed down easily. It looks like a build-up of paint (??) or roughness of the molding process. The manufacturing of these is definitely sketchy and not up to par with the 8020 versions I’ve used in the past.
